Our Exclusive Interview with Mr. Renaldo Gairy
How did you get started in the fitness?
I always had an interest in bodybuilding. I remember
being around 10 years old and watching ESPN's BodyShaping everyday. I
wasn't old enough to lift, but I was learning how.
Finally at the age of 19, I started to consistently lift with the goal
of getting big and as balanced as possible. I didn't think I would be
a competitive bodybuilder back then, but I knew I wanted to look like
one. At the age of 25, a co-worker told me about FAME, and convinced me
that I could be really successful in bodybuilding if I worked hard enough.
So I entered my first show which was the 2005 FAME World Tour.
I was very nervous about the whole thing and I didn't know what to expect
from myself or the other competitors. Things changed the second I stepped
on stage. I felt so calm, confident and more alive than ever. I managed
to capture 1st place in the open bodybuilding category as a light heavyweight.
It's a day in my life I'll never forget.
What do you feel is your biggest accomplishment?
Becoming an inspiration to so many people has been
my biggest accomplishment. Before competing I was a very shy and an unmotivated
individual. I didn’t know how a simple thing like believing in your
dreams could have so much power.
Now that I am developing a strong life and living my dreams, I find a lot
of importance and pleasure inspiring others to do the same.
Is fitness modeling/ competition your
full-time job?
I currently work as a personal
trainer and this is my main source of income. However, bodybuilding is a
lifestyle as it is a sport, and my full time job revolves around it.
What are your long-term goals?
I expect myself to become a prominent figure in the
fitness industry, and I plan to compete for at least another five years.
I also want to go back to school for an MBA. I have a lot of great business
ideas, and a little more education will help me put them into action down
the road.
What supplements do you use?
Whey Protein Isolate
Alpha Lipoic Acid
Glutamine
BCAA
Arginine
MCT oil
How do you motivate yourself to stay
in shape?
My passion for the sport of bodybuilding is all the
motivation I need. People often say to me "you have so much discipline"
and "that must take a lot of work", as if this is all some big
struggle.
Yes, it takes discipline and it is a lot of hard work, and I see it al like
a great challenge. I love being a bodybuilder and with that love comes my
motivation.
What tips would you give to someone
who wanted to get into the fitness modeling (or fitness competition)?
Before entering a fitness competition, be sure to
watch a few yourself, and know what separates the winners from the rest
of the pack.
If you want to do well in a competition, get professional
help. No matter how many years you’ve been training or all the books
you read, getting ready for a show is completely different than anything
else.
Training, posing, depletion, skin colour, etc., can be very tricky, especially
when it’s your first time.
Having someone in your corner who’s been on that stage, and understands
how to present a winning package, can take your from average to excellent.
